Common questions

Operator licensing FAQs

Does my construction business need an operator's licence?

If you run goods vehicles over 3.5 tonnes — tippers, grabs, flatbeds, plant wagons — you'll usually need an operator's licence. There are limited exceptions, so ask us before assuming either way.

What is an external Transport Manager?

An external Transport Manager is a qualified professional who provides the continuous and effective management of your transport operation that the licence requires, without you employing someone full-time. Mark Haley holds the Transport Manager CPC (Road Haulage) and can act in this role for suitable operators.

Who decides whether my licence is granted?

The Traffic Commissioner. We prepare and support your application and help you put the right systems in place, but the decision rests with the licensing authority.

What does the O-licence health check cover?

A practical review of your maintenance records, driver hours arrangements, inspection routines and documentation — with clear, prioritised actions to bring your operation up to standard.
