Common questions

Retained health & safety FAQs

What is a competent person, and do I need one?

Regulation 7 of the Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations 1999 requires every employer to appoint one or more competent persons to help meet their health and safety duties. For most small construction firms, a retained consultancy is the practical way to meet that duty without employing someone full-time.

What's the difference between H&S Core and H&S Complete?

Core gives your business ongoing health and safety support, advice when you need it and help keeping documents and duties up to date. Complete adds wider support across your sites and projects, priority help when something urgent comes up, and support that grows with your business. Is retained support right for a small business?

Usually, yes — it's designed for businesses that need competent advice on tap but can't justify an employed safety manager. You get practical, proportionate support that fits the size and type of work you do.

Can you help if the HSE gets in touch?

Yes. We support clients through HSE visits, enforcement notices and accident investigation, including RIDDOR reporting. Calm, practical help when it matters most.
